Looking forward: The most significant 2024 US healthcare trends - Part 2 of 5

In addition to physical health indicators, mental health declines also serve as a measure of the serious health concerns to the healthcare industry in the United States. These changes likely impact drug manufacturers directly and indirectly through market needs, opportunities, and resource allocations related to the development and marketing of both existing and prospective treatments. 

TREND 2 - Disturbing mental health trends, especially in youth

Mental-health measures reveal a backward slide in mental-health issues, which impact a broad audience and range of health issues.

  • Mental health indicators in America’s youth show continuing declines. More than 40% of high-school students felt so sad or hopeless that they withdrew from regular activities for at least 2 weeks the previous year.1
  • Suicides rose by 2.6% in 2022. Over 25% of youth state they seriously considered suicide as an option.1,2
  • Diagnosed depression has reached an all-time high.3
  • Mental health issues impact 18 to 25 year olds.4

Mental health issues are far reaching. Some experts believe that one cause of the decline in mental health is the emphasis on social media at the expense of activities including reading, sleep, physical exercise, hobbies, face-to-face interactions with friends or family, and experiencing nature. Finding solutions to the mental health crisis is imperative and the healthcare industry must play a major role.
